Nicholas Hawksmoor at the Royal Academy
An exciting new architectural exhibition is coming to the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The influence of Nicholas Hawksmoors iconic and imaginative baroque buildings are illustrated through images, quotations and film interviews. It opens on 4th February, through to 17th June 2012.
Historic Lighting
The Historic Lighting company is brilliant for vintage lighting fittings and fabric covered cable! At The New England Shutter Company we are particularly taken with the pink cable, great for those ’statement’ pendant lights! For anyone searching for interesting filament light bulbs, the sister company Filament Light Bulbs has a great selection. The stamped brown paper packaging is also a nice touch.
Western Red Cedar Cladding
The Olympic Velodrome has been completed ready for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The design by Hopkins Architects was voted the ‘nation’s favourite’ for the RIBA Sterling Prize shortlisted building in September 2011. At The New England Shutter Company we love the elegance of the curvaceous structure.
The exterior cladding uses Western Red Cedar to magnificent effect, (the same type of wood that Nick has used for the shutters on his garden summer house.) Clever ventilation design eliminates the need for air conditioning helping to make the building extremely energy efficient.
After the games the Velodrome will have a mountain bike track and road cycle circuit added to it, creating a “Velo Park” for the local community. We look forward to visiting the Olympic Park!

It’s nice that…
This blog makes for an interesting read – it’s mission is described as: “to champion great creativity” which is exactly what it does! The article on Wouter Scheublin, for example, explains how the designer creates furniture that is animated using ‘mechanised carpentry’. Click here to link to the article…
The ultimate Chair blog!
At The New England Shutter Company we have just discovered the Chair blog! It is brimming with fascinating articles such as the creation of the stitched concrete chair by Florian Scmid. This truly original idea for seating is manufactured from concrete canvas. In contrast the Aviator chair by David Catta is an extravagant seat elaborately engineered from aluminium, steel and wood. It is quite alluring in its curved structure with tension wires.
Mathias Bengtsson has explored layering materials to create very organic forms. The Chair Blog features a particularly striking black and white paper chair by Bengtsson.
